Policy Review: School of the Future

Terms of Reference

1. The policy review will identify possible changes in the roles and operation of primary and secondary schools in 10 to 15 years time. The review will recommend policy developments necessary to take account of these anticipated changes, building on the strategy set out in The Learning Country.

2. The policy review will focus on the following issues:

  • The school as a community resource;
  • Use of, and developments in, information technology;
  • Teaching methods;
  • Curriculum;
  • Funding;
  • Widening opportunity and participation; and
  • Adding value to the education and school experience.

3. The policy review will take account of the National Assembly's three main themes:

  • Sustainable development;
  • Equal opportunities; and
  • Social inclusion.

4. It is intended to start gathering evidence in October 2002 and to report by March 2003.

The Committee will consult widely with relevant organisations and individuals. Anybody with an interest in this review is welcome to submit his or her views to the Committee. As well as a written consultation, the Committee will be inviting organisations and individuals to submit their views in person; to enable more detailed questioning and discussion of the issues raised.
