Policy Objectives of the Proposed Order

The past few years have seen a growing demand for allotments spaces throughout Wales.  In spite of approximately 2,500 people waiting for allotments in Wales, there is little development of new allotment sites on closures or sale of allotments or protection of existing sites. There is also evidence that local authorities are not adhering to existing legislation that requires them to provide allotments or alternative spaces for allotment holders whose sites have been closed.

Article 23 of the Small Holding and Allotments Act of 1908, The Allotments Acts of 1922 and 1950 outline the duty of local authorities to provide allotment sites for their residents. The proposed Order will provide legislative competence over provision of allotments sites.
