Press Release
Committee seeking views on science policy in Wales
The National Assembly’s Economic Development and Transport Committee is carrying out a consultation exercise as part of its review into science policy in Wales.
The review will look at a science policy for Wales that more effectively supports the development of a knowledge-based economy. In particular, the current range of research and development carried out in Wales in both public and private sectors; the ways in which it can be strengthened and made more effective, covering likely priorities for science awareness, skills provision, higher education excellence, technology transfer and innovation. The Committee will make recommendations for the development of policy in this area.
The Committee has now written to businesses and statutory and voluntary organisations all over Wales asking for their views. When it has considered these, the Committee may invite further oral evidence.
Christine Gwyther AM, Chair of the Committee, said: "Wales has some excellent examples of good science education, innovation and technology transfer. But we also underperform in some key areas. We want to get a clear picture of where our strengths lie, and where Wales currently could do better. I urge everyone with an interest in science and technology to contribute to the consultation. The responses will form part of our evidence gathering and will be incorporated into our review. The time is right for this review, and I believe the work we do over the next twelve months will provide a solid platform for a science strategy for Wales in the twenty first century."
