Rural Development Sub Committee

Inquiry into the Production and Promotion of Welsh Food

The Rural Development Sub-Committee undertook an inquiry into the production and promotion of Welsh food. The aim of the inquiry was to:

  • examine the challenges facing the Welsh agri-food sector;

  • assess the success of Welsh Assembly Government initiatives in this area to date;

  • evaluate the appropriateness of the Welsh Assembly Government’s proposals for the future of the sector;

  • make recommendations to the Welsh Assembly Government.

The Committee looked at each element of the food supply chain in Wales from production to consumption.

To gain a comprehensive view of the effectiveness of Welsh Assembly Government initiatives in stimulating the growth of the agri-food sector in Wales, the Committee invited responses from those directly involved in the sector. This included producers and the trade, processors, those involved in the promotion and marketing of Welsh food products, retailers and consumers. The Committee was also keen to receive submissions from across all agri-food sectors, including dairy, red-meat, horticulture, poultry, game, organic and fisheries.
