About the Service
The Research Service provides expert and impartial research and information to support Assembly Members and committees in fulfilling the scrutiny, legislative and representative functions of the National Assembly for Wales.
The Research Service consists of:
four research teams providing specialist advice on specific areas of policy
a research team providing finance and statistical information
a research team providing advice on the Assembly, the constitution, UK and EU legislation, elections and referendums
a Library providing a full range of reference and information services.
We also work with the Assembly’s EU Office in Brussels which provides Assembly Members with advice, information and assistance on EU issues including support with visit programmes.
You can access a range of research briefings and information produced by the Research Service from this website. Our publications are primarily aimed at Assembly Members, and may also be of interest to external organisations and individuals.

Providing specialist advice on the Assembly; devolution; the UK constitution; Welsh, UK and EU legislation (in conjunction with Gregg Jones, EU Office); governance; subordinate legislation; elections; and referendums.

Providing specialist advice on the economy; European Union; social justice; welfare; equal opportunities; voluntary sector; community safety; culture; sport and recreation; museums and libraries; Welsh language; local government, public services, regeneration and housing.

Providing specialist advice on children and young people, education and lifelong learning.

Environment and Transport |
Providing specialist advice on transport; energy; environment; planning; agriculture; fisheries; rural development; sustainable development; forestry; marine and inland waters.

Providing specialist advice on Assembly finance and budgets; local government finance and general statistics including methods and sources.

Health and Social Policy |
Providing specialist advice on health; drug and alcohol misuse; social care and social services; children and young people; older people; community safety.

Providing a reference and information service including official publications; newspapers; periodicals, e-resources and monitoring services.

EU Office |
The Research Service works closely with the Assembly’s EU Office which provides specialist advice and information on EU issues; supporting the Assembly representatives on the Committee of the Regions (and the Council of Europe); promoting the work and interests of the Assembly among EU decision makers and facilitating programmes for Assembly Members and staff delegations to Brussels.
