P-03-074 - Petition to oppose the Redrow Homes application to discharge sewage into Nant Cylla
Petition received: 04 October 2007
Lead Petitioner: Mr Timothy Maddison
Number of Petitioners: 370
Petition Wording:
Residents of Ystrad Mynach are unanimously opposed to the application by Redrow Homes to discharge (emergency) sewage into the Nant Cylla River which runs through the heart of our village, bordering many homes and Businesses before joining the River Rhymney at the southern end of the village.
The Environment Agency has recently urged local residents to ‘register’ on the EA Floodline due to risk of their properties flooding from the Nant Cylla River. I personally received a letter in April of this year together with subsequent detailed advice showing that most of the centre of Ystrad Mynach, including the Junior/Infant School, the New Police Station, the New Hospital and the Duffryn Business Park are all within the 1/100 year flood risk. To ‘deliberately’ add sewage to this flood risk would be an act bordering on madness and a complete disregard of the Environment Agencies prime responsibility to protect the public and environment.
We are already seeing our Rivers and Beaches being polluted due to increased rainfall and run off from excessive developments so steps should be taken to remove this added risk of pollution rather than pander to the greed and profit of development companies and industry. It is possible with just a little thought and proportionately small increase in cost to remove the need to ever discharge sewage from this pumping station into the Nant Cylla. After all, if the River was not available that is exactly what Redrow Homes would have to do.
Many letters, objectively opposing this application have been sent to the Environment Agency expressing total opposition to sewage being discharged into this River under any circumstances whatsoever.
Residents of this small village have raised the attached petition and are calling for the National Assembly for Wales to ‘call in’ the application Ref, AN0412001 and determine the application rather than the Environment Agency whom we strongly believe should not act as judge and jury on this application which could have the most serious health consequences on residents if granted.
On behalf of my fellow residents I urge you to accept this petition, call in the application, ‘determine against the application’ and ensure that Redrow Homes are required to install a system that prevents sewage from ever being discharged from this pumping station into the Nant Cylla River.
