National Assembly for Wales

P-03-067 - Miners’ Welfare Ground, Ty-Du, Nelson

Petition received: 11 July 2007

Lead Petitioner: Mrs P Lapsa

Number of Petitioners: 1692

Petition Wording:

We the undersigned, being residents of Nelson Village are strongly opposed to any development on the above site by your D.E.I.N. The W.D.A. obtained the 7.5 acre site from Caerphilly County Borough Council, who had purchased it on their behalf, from the trustees, without the knowledge of local ex-miners, for a ridiculously low price. The said trustees were not ex-miners, but ex local district councillors.

This land now belongs to the Welsh Assembly Government, and we would ask that ‘The Welfare’, now an area of open countryside, rich in natural beauty, ancient trees, woodland, hedgerows and mixed wildlife, be returned to our village for use by us and future generations. This was the aim of those local coal miners when they bought and payed for this area of land. We have already petitioned Caerphilly County Borough Council to remove the area from their Local Development Plan.
