Procedure for Dealing with Complaints against Assembly Members (Complaint Procedure)

The Committee on Standards of Conduct has established a formal procedure for dealing with complaints against Assembly Members. A number of considerations were taken into account when drawing up the procedure, including:

  1. the unique provisions of the Government of Wales Act 1998, which make it a criminal offence to participate in proceedings whilst failing to declare/register an interest;
  2. the types of complaints that the Committee could/should consider and
  3. the Committee's relationship with the Commissioner for Standards.

The Complaint Procedure was formally approved by the Assembly's Committee on Standards of Conduct on 29 January 2008, and formalises the steps required in any investigation into a complaint made against a Member of the Assembly.
