National Assembly for Wales

Video Biography – Text Version | Rhodri Morgan AM

I am Rhodri Morgan and I am the Assembly Member for Cardiff West, which extends from just north of Gwaelod -y-Garth southwards to the centre of Cardiff along the western bank of the River Taff, taking in Morganstown, Radyr, Llandaff, and Riverside, and westwards out to the edge of the Vale of Glamorgan at the A4232, taking in Canton, Caerau and Ely, then northwards again to take in Fairwater, Creigiau and Pentyrch, so it is a very varied constituency with farmland and the inner city and everything in between.

I was born in Cardiff and went to Radyr Primary and Whitchurch Grammar school, then I studied at Oxford University, then I did my Masters Degree at Harvard University in the USA.

I worked as a lecturer for the Workers Educational Association and as an economic adviser in local and central government before becoming the Head of the European Commission Office in Cardiff.  I was elected to Parliament for Cardiff West in 1988 and stood down as an MP in 2001 after being elected to this Assembly in 1999.

My wife Julie Morgan is the Member of Parliament for Cardiff North; we have three children and seven grandchildren.  We spend time with them at weekends and I am also working on a new vegetable garden.

As well as being the Assembly Member for Cardiff West I am First Minister in the Assembly and Leader of the Welsh Labour Party.
