Hello, I’m Gwenda Thomas – the Assembly Member representing the Neath constituency in our National Assembly.
I was born in 1942 in Gwaun Cae Gurwen.
I was previously a Civil Servant for many years, working in the County Courts division of the Lord Chancellor’s Department and also at the Benefits Agency.
I was a councillor for many years at community, county council and County Borough level, and served as Chair of the Social Services Committees of West Glamorgan County Council and Neath Port Talbot CBC. I am also the Chair of the Governing Body of Gwaun Cae Gurwen Primary School.
I was Chair of the West Glam Campaign for a Welsh Assembly and Vice Chair of "Yes for Wales", Neath.
My interests include health, social services and the rights of children and carers, childcare and the voluntary sector.
I am a fluent Welsh speaker.
I am currently the Welsh Assembly Government’s Deputy Minister for Health and Social Services with special responsibility for Social Services. I also lead for the Welsh Assembly Government on children’s issues.
