My name is John Griffiths. I am the Assembly Member for Newport East, having been elected in the initial election in 1999. Prior to the Assembly, I had a variety of jobs before re-entering education as student and going on to practice as a solicitor. I also served as a councillor on Gwent County Council the Newport Borough Council. I am currently a Member of the Welsh Assembly Government as the Deputy Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning with special responsibility for skills. I am in politics with the Labour party to help achieve the Labour movement's historic aims of fairness and social justice, working for much greater equality of opportunity and equality of outcome in Wales.
