National Assembly for Wales

Video Biography – Text Version | Leanne Wood AM

I am Leanne Wood and I have been a Plaid Cymru Assembly Member for South Wales Central since 2003. The region I represent covers our capital city, the Vale of Glamorgan and Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Before becoming an Assembly Member, I worked as a probation officer and women's support worker. I was brought up in Penygraig in the Rhondda and that's where I live with my partner and my daughter Cerys.

My political interests include international affairs, criminal justice and drugs, women and youth issues, mental health, poverty and social justice.

I want Wales to become an independent nation within the European Union. I am also a committed socialist and I believe in working for Wales to become an independent socialist republic.

The major challenge Wales faces is poverty:in the pocket; in our understanding; and in our ambition. Only when we, as politicians, and a country, face up to that challenge, will we deserve the trust of the people of Wales.

I hope that as an Assembly Member, I can serve my constituents and help Wales flourish into the fair, prosperous and ambitious nation we have the talent to be.
