Ann Jones was born and brought up in Rhyl on the North Wales Coast, where she has lived all her life. She worked for nearly 30 years in fire control rooms in North Wales and Merseyside until her election to the National Assembly for Wales in 1999.
An active trade unionist, Ann served as a national official in the Fire Brigades Union for a number of years and sat on both the Welsh Labour Party and Wales TUC Executives She is a member of UNISON and Chairs the UNISON Group of Assembly Members. She also remains an ‘out of trade’ member of the FBU. Before being elected to the Assembly in 1999, Ann served as a Rhyl Town Councillor and was the town’s Mayor in 1996/7. She was also a Denbighshire County Councillor. She was Agent for the Labour Party in 1983, 1987 & 1992 for the Clwyd North West constituency and following boundary changes she was Agent for the successful 1997 campaign in the new Vale of Clwyd constituency which saw Chris Ruane elected as Labour MP.
In the second Assembly Ann Jones chaired the Assembly’s Local Government & Public Services Committee, and sat on the Assembly’s Local Government and Voluntary Sector Partnership Councils and the North Wales Regional Committee. Ann is Chair of the Assembly’s All Party Group on Deaf Issues and is a member of the liaison committee between the National Assembly Labour Party and the Welsh Parliamentary Labour Party.
