Purpose
In 2001, the Welsh Assembly Government, along with EU Heads of State, set a target to halt the loss of biodiversity by 2010. It is now widely acknowledged that this ambitious commitment has not been met and we are still losing biodiversity at an alarming rate.
The process of protecting biodiversity benefits society: it provides resources to sustain and enhance our health; it offers educational opportunities; it contributes to the regeneration of communities and supports and generates economic activity though jobs and green tourism. In addition to the many practical reasons for conserving biodiversity, there is also a very strong ethical case for protecting other forms of life that share the planet with us.
The group will seek to raise the profile of biodiversity in Wales and obtain support from politicians from the four main parties, who will champion the cause of Wales’ wildlife in the Assembly.
